“I feel so blessed that my paths crossed with Michelle. Upon meeting her I was instantly greeted with a strong independent woman that was eager to share her endless wisdom of the fashion industry. I asked her for help because I was struggling as an unemployed graduate, I felt lost and confused since leaving university. Michelle took me under her wing and taught me the facts that university doesn’t tell you! Michelle was optimistic for me, kept in great contact, revamped my CV, helped revamp my portfolio & endlessly fed me great advice and tips.”

“I would work with Michelle again in a heartbeat. Michelle is one of the best designers I’ve worked with, as I was a junior at the time she really took me under her wing and always made time for me when I needed help. Her knowledge of the industry is as good as anyone else I have worked with and her drive is what sets her apart in my opinion”.

Meet the founder

My Fashion Tutor, was set up by Michelle Muirhead in 2013. Using her wealth of experience in design and passion for fashion education to help others, reach their potential in the fashion industry. Starting her journey with a Diploma at London College of Fashion and completed her BA Hons degree in Fashion from, The University of Creative Arts.

Having bounced back from being made redundant twice within her fifteen-year career as a clothing designer, she understands the fashion industry, inside out. She now uses this experience to teach the next generation of fashion industry professionals as a visiting lecturer, tutor and career’s mentor at one of the top universities in England. My Fashion Tutor is a natural progression for this passionate teacher and knowledgeable industry professional.

Michelle’s career in the fashion industry specialised in menswear design, working with the likes of Wolsey, Gio-Goi and Ted Baker. She’s experienced with every stage of the design and production process, including initial design concept, technical drawing, pattern cutting, computer-aided design, sample development, liaising with factories and even graphic design for promotion. Michelle has travelled the world for trade shows, delivering presentations and trend research, adding to a global wealth of experience that feeds into her teaching.

With keen entrepreneurial spirit, Michelle previously set up and ran her own t-shirt business that designed and supplied graphic t-shirts. As company director responsible for strategy, finance and marketing, alongside design, Michelle learnt the basic rubrics for small business management. Again, this first-hand experience supports her one-to-one mentoring for fashion entrepreneurs, enabling a true understanding of the challenges and joys of running your own business.

Through her teaching Michelle is able to inspire students of all ages and from all walks of life. One of her proudest moments involved mentoring students for ‘Set Fashion Free’, a local council project based in London aimed at encouraging teenagers to explore culture and identity through fashion. Using West African textiles as a starting point, Set Fashion Free gives young people the opportunity to do things and see places that they never have before. The sessions culminate in a fashion show led by the young people.

As well as working to inspire others, Michelle strives to continually improve upon on her own skills and knowledge too. Since graduating she has taken a number of short courses on professional practice for personal styling, computer-aided design and teaching. This includes a personal coaching course from the London Coaching Academy and a NLP foundation course.

In her free time Michelle enjoys hitting the gym, eating out at restaurants, travelling and perfecting her dance moves at Soul Stepping!
