Fabric, Prints and Dyeing Processes

Selecting fabrics and knowing where to source fabrics is an essential element of clothing design and development. Whether working for a major brand or starting up your own fashion design business, having an understanding of fabrics and finishes can help with costing, creating the right product fit for purpose and inevitably growing a loyal customer base.

WHAT can we do for you?

Fabric selection and sourcing is an essential element of clothing design and development. If you are a recent design graduate or new to the fashion industry you may not know the professional processes involved in sourcing fabric for mass production. You will leave with valuable and relevant training to add to your CV or skills that can be applied to your job or business.

Our course will provide you with an overview of these processes and leave you with the skills required to evaluate different fabrics, blends and finishes. We will teach you the technical terminology used as standard in the clothing industry to enable you to source fabrics with confidence.

During the course you will learn to do the following: –

  • Basic understanding of fibres and yarns and how they are produced
  • The professional terminology used for fabrications and units of measurement
  • The properties and characteristics of different fabric blends
  • A brief overview of understanding commercial fabric testing reports
  • Analysing the reasoning and legalities for wash care instructions
  • Review current technologies in commercial garment dye processes
  • Evaluate different washes and finishing processes in garment manufacture
  • Analyse the different print processes
  • What to consider when sourcing and selecting fabrics

This course in predominately for woven fabrics, however a limited amount of knitted fabrics may also be covered.

Although this course is theory based, students will be able to touch and familiarise visually with what they are being taught through the introduction of swatches demonstrating techniques, dyes and prints.

This course is classroom based. Students are advised to bring a notebook and pen.

Students will be given handouts with key points and a Certificate of Attendance.

All our associate tutors have industry experience in the fields of clothing design, production and fit. They are always approachable and have a genuine desire to share their knowledge.
This course is taught at a basic to intermediate level.

No entry requirements.

This is a one-day course, with 1-hour lunch break and two 15-minute tea breaks.
